Sailfish - El Ocotal - Costa Rica
For billfish and light-tackle favorites it’s hard to top El Ocotal. Located in Northern Costa Rica, local waters boast healthy populations of sailfish, especially during the late spring through early fall months. Both blue and black marlin are also present, in almost equal numbers. Most will run 250 to 350 pounds, though trophies of both species over 700 pounds have been boated. Large dorado (the IGFA world record was set here), wahoo, and tuna are plentiful offshore as
well, Huge roosterfish are a major draw in-shore (after all, home waters are known as the Gulf of Papagayo or Bay of roosterfish), plus ample supplies of big snapper, grouper and jack, among many other gamefish. Ocotal’s fleet of 30’-32’ cruisers are run by experienced captains and mates, and carry a full range of quality trolling tackle.
For the non-angler, take advantage of Costa Rica’s most extensive, and
unique Scuba diving program, a variety of eco-tours to local rainforests, or the Arenal Volcano, or just relax and enjoy the private beach, pool or tennis courts. The local scenery is magnificent, including the views from the resort’s terraces, which sit on top of a high bluff overlooking the azure ocean. Double occupancy rooms or larger bungalows are air-conditioned and well-appointed, and compliment the attractive main lodge and delicious meals.
