Mexico’s Yucatan is one of the great shallow water fisheries. Miles of fertile flats produce prodigious numbers of bonefish, abundant permit, plus occasional tarpon, snook and barracuda. Bones typically run under five pounds, but what they lack in size they make up in numbers. Twenty plus fish days are realistic, with some anglers landing over 30 in a single day. For permit, there is no spot more highly recommended. Eight to fifteen pounders are the norm, with plenty over 20 pounds as well. Each season these waters produce permit over 35, even 40 pounds. Along mangrove shorelines and lagoons, anglers can find tarpon and snook. While action for both can be good, the bones and permit are typically the main concentration. Large, shallow draft pangas are available for each pair of anglers. Each one has both captain and mate, so there are always two sets of eyes searching the flats for the subtle movements of a bone or cruising permit. When anglers wade a large flat, each angler will have a guide at their side and not have to share one between the two.
Let it Be Inn is located in the town of Punta Allen, at the north end of Ascension Bay. It offers simple, clean accommodations that feature electricity and private bathrooms, along with wonderful, home cooked meals. The camp only handles six anglers at a time, so personal service and a flexible routine is always a standard.
