Tarpon - Turneffe Islands / Turneffe Flats - Belize
The Turneffes have a long history of excellent
bonefishing dating back into the early 1960’s. Overall, anglers can
expect larger bones here than in other parts of Belize, with five to
eight pounders not uncommon, along with substantial schools which provide
fast action. Because of their proximity to the barrier reefs, many of
the flats are also ideal for wary permit, which run 8 to 15 pounds on
average. Tarpon in the 20 to 50 pound class are also present, along
with the occasional fish that tops 80 pounds. Although they are present
year round, the best time to challenge them is during the spring and
summer months. Grouper, snapper, jack and barracuda are plentiful along
the nearby reefs while wahoo, king mackerel and even the odd dorado
are possible outside the reef, easily accessed when the sea is calm.
Both Turneffe Island Lodge and Turneffe Flats lodge offer substantial
fishing programs, with good fleets of shallow draft skiffs and crews
of well trained guides. Accommodations at both lodges are top notch,
with air-conditioned rooms, well prepared meals and a hard working staff
hallmarks. For those who want to take advantage of Belize’s excellent
diving opportunities, combination programs that allow both fishing and
Scuba can be easily arranged.
