Payara - Uraima Falls - Venezuela
To be sure, the saber-tooth payara is one of the world’s most interesting gamefish. It’s a freshwater predator supreme, lying in wait beyond rocks and riverside eddys, it’s mouthful of sharp, unique teeth making it almost impossible for prey to escape its grasp. Uraima Falls is almost without peer in producing trophy payara and presently hosts almost all the
light tackle world records for the species. Over the years Uraima has averaged close to eight payara per day per angler, with an average weight of close to ten pounds. Many anglers will tangle with, and hopefully land, at least one payara over 20 pounds, while more than just a few boat payara in excess of 30 pounds. Uraima Falls’ small crew of guides know the many moods of this fertile though relatively small watershed, and work hard to insure anglers are in the best spots to get a maximum of rod jarring strikes, and to witness a silver sided payara clear the water in an effort to shake the lure.
Uraima Falls Lodge is located right on the water-within a few minutes of leaving the lodge anglers are in prime payara habitat. The lodge features attractive, thatched roof rondolets, each with two bedrooms, full bathroom with hot water showers and solar electricity. The huge main building houses dining and lounge facilities, all set in an attractive, pristine setting where guests can relax at day’s end and watch the sun set over the river.
