Guri Lake Peacock Bass-Venezuela
Created over 30 years ago by the
damming of the Caroni and Paragua rivers, Guri has grown into an impressive peacock bass fishery. It’s a huge lake, and anglers really only fish the fringes, large lagoons which can run into the hundreds of thousands of acres, with tons of fallen and standing timber that provide excellent pavon habitat. As these lagoons are interconnected, there’s literally miles and miles prime water to explore on a daily basis. Peacocks, along with the colorful Butterfly and Royal Pavon are all present. Most will fall into the four to eight pound range, with some peacocks running 12 to
15 pounds. This is not normally a trophy fishery and not a good choice for a 20 pound plus trophy, but it is a solid option for anglers who enjoy lots of action on strong pavon. 15 to 25 bass landed a day is typical, though there are days when double that number is not unusual. The occasional payara,
piranha and amara round out the menu, though the pavon get the lion’s share of the spotlight.
Paovan Lodge provides excellent facilities. Experienced guides captain well maintained aluminum
boats with new outboards. The attractive lodge,
located right on the lake, provides plenty of
creature comforts, a hard working staff, and well
prepared meals that combine American style entrees
with local favorites.
