Trout - Goodnews River Lodge - Alaska
|
The three branches of the Goodnews River flow through the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, creating a substantial and lengthy habitat for a wide array of salmon, trout, char and grayling.
Goodnews River Lodge is perfectly situated close to the river’s exit into the ocean to take full advantage of this marvelous fishery. On a daily basis, anglers move up and down the river in jet powered boats, some of which reach top speeds of 70 mph. You can cover a great deal of ground in these boats, and never be at the mercy of the weather which can hinder fly out opportunities. Beginning in mid to late June, anglers will encounter salmon entering the river, mint bright from their years at sea, aggressive and at the peak of their physical conditioning. Kings arrive first, then sockeyes, chums and pinks, with a very strong run of silvers finishing up the summer long migratory flow of salmon. Throughout the summer, anglers will encounter rainbow trout that average close to four pounds, and often run seven to eight, occasionally into double digits. There’s little more exciting than throwing a deer hair mouse along a grassy bank and waiting for the smashing strike of a big bow chasing your fly. Char, dolly varden and grayling are also plentiful and always at hand. GRL’s crew of guides have years under their belt running jet boats and fishing for both salmon and trout.
Accommodations are in heated, insulated double walled tents, each set on a raised platform. Inside, electricity and heat keep things comfortable. Nearby, there’s a heated bath tent with individual showers, a spacious tent for drying waders, and a large main lodge with both lounge and dining facilities.
