Trout - Red Deer River - Alberta
A trout fishing diamond in the rough. A scant hour and a half north of Calgary, Alberta’s Red Deer River beckons the angler who wants sizeable brown trout in an attractive setting. Rich in a variety of insects, from outsize stoneflies to delicate mayflies and caddis, the Red Deer River is a prolific producer of sizeable, big-shouldered browns. Dry fly fishing for trout that often exceed 16", sometimes 20" is the norm, with larger browns a realistic possibility. For those who prefer nymphs and streamers, there are abundant opportunities as well. Prodigious hatches can make trout picky at times, though long, delicate leaders are not ordinarily required for success. An experienced local guiding crew, with years on the river, help anglers unlock and enjoy the Red Deer’s many pleasures. Other nearby rivers, from the spring-creek-like North Raven to the cutthroat packed North Ram are also available for those who want to explore additional waters. Guests stay in a comfortable motel just minutes from the water.
